Action Against Hunger (AAH) is part of the Action Contre la Faim International Network (ACFIN). ACFIN is an international, non-governmental and non-religious organization who has been at the forefront of the fight against hunger and malnutrition worldwide for 25 years. Working in emergency response and longer term assistance in the areas of nutrition, health, food security, water and sanitation we are regularly looking for nurses to work in our health programmes and therapeutic feeding centres.

 

Job Title

Nurse / Nutritionist

All nurses are given pre departure training on the nutrition aspects of the programmes run by AAH.

 

Location

Worldwide including:

Africa, Asia (Southern, Central and Eastern and Caucasus), Southern / Central America and the Middle East

 

Description

We are targeting nurses who are interested in:

• Treatment and prevention of severe malnutrition and infectious diseases

• Working in challenging conditions in developing countries

• Teaching health and community workers in the field

• Learning more about nutrition and the fight against hunger

• Having a varied and rewarding job in the humanitarian sector

• Adapting their professional skills to developing countries and public health  

 

Nurse/nutritionists could be involved in any of the following roles:

• Supervision and management of therapeutic and supplementary feeding centres. • Supervision and management of primary health clinics and mother/child health clinics.

• Establishing primary health care programmes including immunisation and health education.

• Recruitment, training and management of national medical staff.

• Communication with local ministries and relevant authorities

• Monitoring and evaluation of programme activities

• Data collection and report writing

• Pharmacy management

• Ordering and stock control of medical supplies

 

Recruitment is for the pool only. Nurses are then matched to vacancies in the field as they become available. Posts are then offered to individual nurses depending on their availability for departure.

 

Salary

£8,000-£14,000

Technical field staff receive £8,000-£14,000 p.a. gross depending on previous humanitarian experience. This is paid directly into your home bank account and a per diem (daily allowance) is received in the field for personal use. Food, accommodation and work related travel are all paid for. In the majority of circumstances, you will not need to access your salary at home for normal daily living requirements.

 

Other Details

Accommodation is generally in a shared house, with single rooms.

 

Health and Insurance AAH provides a pre-departure health check and recommended vaccinations for employees plus a health check on return to the UK. Health Insurance and emergency medical evacuation are covered according to conditions.

 

Holidays and Breaks Regular 7 day breaks are given within the year contract (every 3-6 months depending on the intensity of the country situation) as well as one month` s paid leave on renewing the contract for another year.

 

Contracts Contracts are generally for 1 year with flexibility for shorter missions and renewing for further service.

 

Requirements

Applicants should have 2 years clinical experience preferably with some paediatrics and a UK PIN number. Conducting training is an essential role of all of our staff and applicants should be confident to conduct medical and basic nutritional education to national staff. Nurses will often be the only medical staff on site and should be comfortable to work autonomously and confident to make decisions. As stated, nutrition training will be provided but an interest in nutrition is desirable.
